Staying at Hotel Jen Penang

One thing that I look forward to after a
long day of walking and sightseeing is a comfortable bed. I can compromise on a
lot of things when traveling but I get a bit fussy on sleep. Given that I have
a bit of insomnia and a known light sleeper (Read: I woke up one night when
shower water was dripping at 2 am in Japan), I need to be really comfy in bed.
Since it’s my first time visiting Penang, I
know I’ll pack the itinerary to the brim and would need all the rest at night, so
a centrally-located hotel is a must. Hotel Jen if you’re not familiar with the
hotel chain is actually part of the Shangri-La Hotel Group. Think of it as the
more hip brand and the property in Penang is not an exemption. Centrally
located in the heart of Penang’s vibrant and bustling George Town, close to the
UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as prime commercial, business and shopping
areas. Hotel Jen has been refurbished and redesigned to feature distinct
highlights of Penang blended with contemporary touches.
I stayed in the Deluxe room, which is the
smallest room at Hotel Jen – but boy wasn’t it small at all.
The room is 28 sqm in size. What first greeted me was the brightly-lit room overseeing the picturesque Georgetown. For a blogger like myself I instantly thought of all the amazing photos I will be taking in the comfort of my hotel. The second thing I checked was the bathroom – double sink? Check! Toiletries? Check! Rainshower? Check. Then I checked the fridge because at 11 am with the roaring Penang sun, I was already thirsty and good thing was there were fresh cut fruits waiting for me in the fridge courtesy of Jen. I think the highlight of my room is still the eloquently designed rooms, I got the Peranakan windows.

At 2pm, I met up with Nadia, Digital
Marketing Communications manager from Hotel Jen for my media tour. We met at
the lobby and started the journey to the Club Lounge. The Club Lounge provides access to discerning
travellers who appreciate the exclusivity and attentive service. Located on the
16th floor and is open until 11 pm, the stylish space allows you to relish the
breathtaking panoramic views of the historical George Town. As part of my
collaboration I was provided access to the Club Lounge and boy did I feel like
a queen. Some of the benefits I enjoyed were the following:
·
Free drinks and snacks all day
long (Tip: the banana bread at tea break was to die for). Full disclosure that
I may have at least 10 cups of latte whilst I stayed at Jen.
·
Evening drinks and canapes - where I had one, too many beers
·
Pressing of one piece of
clothing – the dress which I wore on my last day in Penang!
Other benefits that you can enjoy are the
following as well:
·
Exclusive check-in and
check-out
·
Two-hour complimentary use of
my meeting room per stay (must be booked in advance)
·
PressReader app, which provides
access to over 7,000 newspapers and magazines
·
Surfspot with iMac workstation
For MYR 100++ per person, you can actually
upgrade to a club lounge access and I really think it is worth it.
After having
a few snacks and chatting with Nadia at the Club Lounge. Off we go to see the other
rooms. First stop is the family room which was thoughtfully designed with
families in mind, it has a very stylish sofa-bed that you can either use as a
day bed or as a children’s bed at night.
The next stop is the Executive suite. A 52-78 sqm room which has
everything you need Executive comfort with everything you need: a sitting room,
dining area and open workspace – plus Club Lounge
perks.
The spacious floorplan actually has a separate bedroom and living area. The double bathroom sink is a plus for couples who would have separate needs. The room also has a Nespresso machine with complimentary coffee capsules.

The last room we checked out is the Apartment, which is the latest
category in the rooms. It’s a 60 sqm size room equipped with modern
kitchenette, washing machine and 2-door refrigerator. It also has the Nespresso
machine with complimentary coffee capsules. This is best for travellers who
like to really feel at home when they’re traveling or for those who are looking
to stay at a particular destination for a longer time. The apartment also comes
with exclusive club lounge access!
After the rooms, we
went straight to the Health Club where it houses a full-service gym. Yes,
that’s right not just two treadmills and an incomplete set of weights but a
proper gym with all of the major equipments you’ll find in a gym plus a room
for yoga, barre, Zumba and other floor exercises. If you’re not up to break a
sweat, then why not go for a relaxing massage or facial in one of the cozy
rooms of the spa or at the comfort of your hotel room. Just adjacent to the Health Club is the pool,
after the media tour I changed to swimwear and sunbathed in one of the pool
beds while reading “The Art of Happiness” by Dalai Lama. On the mezzanine level
of the pool is an open garden overlooking Georgetown, I heard the sunset views
were breathtaking from this angle but I was also imaging a morning yoga here
would be good too! Just borrow one of the yoga mats from the Health club and
you’re good to go with the sun salutations.
The last leg of the
tour brings us to where it all began, the lobby. Café Jen offers diners
authentic Asian cuisine and international flavours, drawing inspiration from
Italian kitchens. Its decor is minimal, with wooden tables and shelves of
potted plants to stand out against the muted grey floor.
