Every 18th of June

I’m so happy floppy hats and boater hats are in season, or else I wouldn’t know what to do with my thick, unruly hair. I may have a way of putting together and styling clothes, but I really suck at fixing my hair. I do own a brush, hair dryer (mom’s) and curling iron (gift) but I have a hard time operating the last two.  I have a headful of hair, and I don’t mean ordinary thick hair. I’m talking volume and weight so it gets out of shape or really heavy when it’s too long. During my collaboration discussion with In Trim Hair, they asked me what results I wanted to achieve so that they can recommend the right hair service for me.

At first I thought I needed an Argan Oil treatment but after further consultation they suggested Anti-Frizz straightening instead.  I told them my hair issue. I would like to maintain the volume or at least the illusion of volume on a daily basis through low maintenance practices (read: I don’t have time to blow dry my hair every morning). 

Anti-Frizz straightening is like putting on permanent make-up. After the treatment my hair will be shinier, frizz-free and easy to manage. She also recommended a hair cut from the senior stylist Jessie, as Jessie could layer my hair in a flattering way.

The entire process including the haircut took 3 hours. But I wasn’t bored at all as I had unlimited green tea and the salon was well-lit with interesting wall designs. I had a chat with Jessie and she said In Trim salon has been in operation for 13 years. They were previously located in Concorde hotel, however due to renovations they moved to The Aperia mall four months ago.

After the process, all I could say is O.M.G. I really felt lighter. I think I lost around 1-2 kg there. My neck, which has been hurting for the past weeks or months now, had a breather.  I could also see that my hair was instantly shiny and it really looks healthier.  I had a haircut as well that complemented my squareish face.

Thanks to the internet and Google, you can literally find everything you need with just a few taps and clicks. I’m one of those folks who types “nail salon near Tanjong Pagar” or “good spas near Somerset” and my decision depends heavily on the top search result on Google. That’s not always good though, because there’s such a thing as search engine optimization (SEO)  which according to the Business Dictionary refers to the process of improving traffic to a given website by increasing the site's visibility in search engine results. Websites sometimes do this by creating better content, but this could also be done by “purchasing” visibility. A more accurate but a slightly more tedious process is to read reviews done via parallel blogs. This is the safer way when you have the luxury of time, not when you want to do something on the fly.

Scenario: You’re on the bus ride home and you realized you have a few hours to spare so why not spend it on a new manicure?

Scenario 2: The next movie is not until an hour, why not have that haircut you’ve been pushing off?

We stayed for 4 days and 3 nights, the first day was spent exploring the old market and night market. I checked out a few souvenirs and settled for a Cambodia fridge magnet. I’m not much of a souvenir person. I sent my best friend in Sweden a postcard from Cambodia when I went to Phnom Penh last year so that will take care of it!

The second day we hired a tuktuk for a full day and contracted him through our hotel to avoid the stress of hustling and to avoid touts.  Our Angkor Wat adventure started at 5:00 am – we wanted to catch the sunrise! Obviously, you can’t really have a full-proof schedule of the sun rise and you just have to make do with an estimate. Reached the place at 5:45 am and since it was summer, the sun rose much later- at around 6:10 am. But ever since we reached the place, we were taking pictures of everything and 30 minutes later the sun was so orange with all its glory. It was so surreal! J Angkor is actually a village where the Angkor Wat is located along with numerous other temples – it would take around 2 to 3 days to complete the route if you are to visit every nook and cranny. We just went to the major ones e.g. Ta Prom (where the Tomb Raider film was shot), Bayon temple, Angkor Thom and Bakong)

The third day we decided to go for a half-day floating village tour and then watch the sunset at the famous Tonle Sap Lake, the biggest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia.  So the floating village actually floats on water during high-tide, but since we went during the hottest month, they were just “floating” on stilts. Our tour guide said that around 2,000 families live in the floating village. Some study and work abroad or in the city, but they always go back to their families. Arrived back at the city around 7:00 pm, went for a cold shower and then headed back to the pub street where I did some gelish pedicure since it was way cheaper than Singapore (US$10). Grabbed a bite, and then went to the convenience store to buy back some snacks for the night cap. 

Overall! We had a blast and a tick off my travel list :)
